Blueprint

The condo building in this image was just a doodle modeled in SketchUp for fun, it isn't a real project. In a series of illustrations based on the model I've used Xara to explore various rendering techniques. For this one I created a mottled texture image in Xara, exported it, and applied it to the model in SketchUp. Exported images of the model were then brought into Xara where they were manipulated to build up the final effect.

Many people assume the ultimate goal of 3d modeling is photorealistic visualization. In fact many modelers recognize value in non-photo-real rendering called NPR. This blueprint is an example of NPR. Its goal is for you to be engaged with the image allowing you to sense something significant about the subject yet without actually providing you a high level of detail. For instance in this image you don't know if the building is brick, concrete or some other material. NPR is an important visualization approach for architects particularly in the early stages of a project when much of the detail is yet to be determined. In such cases if a illustration shows too much detail, clients can end up getting caught up in secondary details (like the colour of brick) and not see main issues.
