In a nutshell, Brightness makes the colors in a selected bitmap image lighter or darker. I've shown two extreme examples. Often a tiny amount of lightness or darkness is all that is needed.

Contrast makes the darks darker and the lights lighter (right side), or makes the brights not as bright and the darks not as dark (left side), depending upon which way you move the slider.

Color increases the color saturation to the point where the colors look almost fluorescent. If you move the slider the other way, it takes all the color out of the image leaving only a grayscale image.

While Color and Contrast might at first glance appear to be the same, notice that in both Color examples, the detail remains in the clouds, whereas in the Contrast examples, the subtle detail has been lost.
