Xara Xtreme Brass Hinge tutorial April 2006

I prefer pine wood to redwood because the brass hinge will look more elegant against the pine. Here's how we can turn the redwood into pine. Make a duplicate rectangle and apply a flat Orange-Yellow fill from the Named Colors section on the screen palette. Select the rectangle with the Transparency Tool (F6), select Bleach from the drop down list of Transparency Types on the Infobar, and move the Transparency slider to about 20%

Select both rectangles then right click on the selected rectangles and from the pop up menu, select Create Bitmap Copy. Select the True Color Color Depth option and from the Bitmap Size tabbed section, select 300dpi. Delete the rectangles and just keep the bitmap version.

Duplicate (Ctrl d) the rounded rectangle. Set the Bevel to none and change the fill to a flat color.

Select the duplicate with the Contour Tool (Ctrl F7) and drag outward a small distance (about 2 pixels) to apply an Outer Contour. Press the Insert Path diamond shaped icon. This creates a single shape.

Position the new shape over the center of the wood and let the right side overlap the edge by a few pixels. Clone the wood panel (Ctrl k) and then select the contoured rounded rectangle and bring it to the front (Ctrl f or Arrange > Bring to Front).

Select the contoured rectangle and the cloned wood panel and Arrange > Combine Shapes... Intersect Shapes (or press Ctrl 3). Don't worry it is still there, it just matches the shape below and so you cannot see it.

Select the new shape with the Bevel Tool and select Flat from the drop down list of Bevel Types. Click the Inner Bevel icon (the inward facing arrows) to change the direction of the bevel from outward to inward.

Drag the Light Angle arrow in the center 180 degrees so it is pointed to the lower right. This makes the wood look like we used a router to make a perfect shape in which to place our hinge.
