Even though the barrel of the hinge is pretty much at eye level, it will appear more realistic if there is a small amount of roundness to it. Create 2 ellipses to the sizes shown above left top and left bottom. Align these ellipses with the top and the bottom of the 5 rectangles. Select the Blend Tool (F7). Click on the bottom ellipse and drag up to the top ellipse to create a blend. On the Infobar, change the number of Blend Steps from 5 to 96 and press Enter to apply the change. With the blend selected, from the Arrange menu, click Convert to Editable Shapes. Open the Arrange menu again and select Ungroup. Select and delete all but the ellipses that are closest to the point where the rectangles meet. Drag guidelines from the top screen ruler through the points at which the ellipses touch. Zoom in very close (Alt Z to switch to the Zoom Tool) and make sure that the ellipses are vertically centered on the guidelines. Precision is important.
Using the Selector Tool (the arrow pointer - F2), drag a marquee selection rectangle around all the ellipses and rectangles. Open the Alignment menu (Arrange > Align ) and select Align Centrally from the Horizontal Positions: drop down list. Press Apply and then Close.
The top and bottom ellipse have to be centered on the edge of the rectangle. That is to say, for the top ellipse and rectangle, 1/2 of the ellipse must be above the top edge and 1/2 below it. Select the top ellipse and top rectangle. From the Arrange menu select Combine Shapes... Add Shapes or press Ctrl 1, the keyboard shortcut. Repeat this step and Add Shapes with the bottom ellipse and rectangle.
