Using the Freehand and Brush Tool, draw a trunk shape that ends a bit above the actual bottom of the trunk so that a row of grass covers the bottom of the trunk. Draw a large shadow shape.
Select the trunk shape and the shadow shape and Arrange > Combine Shapes... Subtract Shapes. Apply 8pix of feathering to the shadow then using the Shape Editor Tool , move the side areas control points next to the trunk closer to the trunk so that you do not see a space between the trunk and the shadow.. Apply a Fractal Plasma, Stained Glass transparency. Adjust the fill path arrows as shown. Make the center transparency slider setting 50% and either of the outside slider settings 80% . This produces a dappled shadow effect.
And here is the final tree with these modifications. I added a pool ball from the June 2003 tutorial, just because the picture wanted something of a different color. And I made a more complex leaf which you can see gracefully falling to earth on the right. And, as I like to do, I made a bitmap copy of the illustration, centered it on top and applied an Elliptical, Stained Glass transparency making the center transparency amount 100% and the outside transparency amount 0%. This just makes the colors deeper and a little more saturated. And there you have it. You can make your tree larger and add more branches if you want. Or you can leave it just like this.
