Using the Fill Tool (F5), apply Linear fills to the ribbon shapes using the colors and positions shown. HOW TO: The quick and intuitive way to apply a Linear (gradient) fill is to click the object with the Fill Tool, and drag in the direction you want the fill to go. If you hold down the Ctrl key when you drag, the fill will be constrained to horizontal, vertical, or a few angles. To add more colors, double click on the fill path arrow with the Fill Tool.
Group all of the ribbon shapes. Select the Shadow Tool (Ctrl F2) and drag downward to apply an intuitive Wall Shadow.
Here's the final image which has been placed over a Circular filled rectangle with a dark red and pink fill. In retrospect there are a few things I might have done differently. While the pine needles work pretty well, I think it would have been better to apply a Linear fill to the original needle before making the brush. Maybe a lighter green on the tips of the needles and a deeper green on the inside. I also wanted to add some Juniper branches which this time of year have very attractive pale purple berry clusters. But I also wanted to get this tutorial finished before Christmas. Speaking of which, this ends another year of tutorials and I would like to wish each and everyone of you a joyous holiday season! Question, comments or holiday greetings are always welcome and always appreciated. You can use the form on the next page to send me your feedback. I'll be taking January off. See you all in February 2006. Gary W. Priester
