Select the Ellipse Tool (Shift F4). Hold down the Ctrl key (to constrain the ellipse to a circle) and drag out a circle 325 pixels wide. Make another circle 130 pixels wide. TIP: Make the smaller circle, Clone the circle (Ctrl k), change the Width on the Infobar to 130 and press Enter. This resizes the clone and centers it inside the first circle. Select the Blend Tool (F7). Click on the large circle and drag to the same spot on the smaller circle to apply a blend. Change the number of Blend Steps on the Infobar to 3 and press Enter to apply the change. Click the Position Profile arrow icon on the Infobar and select Profile 2 from the drop down list. Select the blend and from the Arrange menu, select Convert to Editable Shapes.
Select the 3 pine branches and the other branch with the funny leaves (it is supposed to be Mistletoe) and reduce the size to 25% (enter 25 in the W % text entry box on the Infobar and press Enter). Select the 3 pine branches then select the Freehand and Brush Tool (F3). Press the Create Brush button. Name the new brush Pine Branches and press OK . Drag a horizontal line with the Freehand and Brush Tool as shown above.
I'm not sure why we need to do this, but I have already done the tutorial and found out the hard way. For some reason the direction of the paths on the blend-created circles is different and when we apply the pine branch brush, the three inside brushes to go in the opposite direction. So, first select the converted blend and Arrange > Ungroup . Click on the page to deselect the circles. Hold down the Shift key and click on the 3 inner circles (shown above in red). Switch to the Shape Editor Tool (F4) and press the Reverse Paths icon on the Infobar. Now all our circles are going the same direction. (Trust me on this).
