Select the spiral with the Selector Tool, then switch to the Shape Editor Tool.

Click on the spiral at the place where the spiral and the small ellipse are tangent (touching) to add a new control point. Click the Break at Points icon on the Infobar. Switch back to the Selector Tool (the arrow pointer), select the portion of the spiral shown above in blue dashed outline and delete this portion. (You may need to press the Esc key first to deselect the spiral and then select and delete).

Select the larger ellipse and Break at Points as shown above. The point center right will be the ellipse's control point. The top right control point you will add first by clicking on the outline, then pressing Break at Points.

NOTE: If you click on the selected ellipse and nothing happens, you probably did not convert the ellipse to editable shapes (Arrange > Convert to Editable Shapes ). Delete the portion of the ellipse shown in blue dashed outline.

Make the edits to the small ellipse shown above and delete the portion shown in blue dashed outline.

Drag a vertical and horizontal guideline through the place there the spiral and the bottom portion of the small ellipse meet.

Select the spiral and the remaining section of the small ellipse. From the Arrange menu, select Join Shapes. This only partially joins the two shapes. To make the join permanent, select the joined shape then switch to the Shape Editor Tool. Place the Shape Editor Tool cursor over the intersection of the two guidelines. Drag the top point a little away and then back to the intersection of the guidelines. A + will appear (as shown above) to indicate that now the two line segments are indeed going to be joined.

Save your drawing and take a short break.

NOTE: For years I have advised users to take short breaks to rest their eyes while at the same time, I just kept working away. I have finally found a solution that works well for me. I purchased a ships clock, one that strikes on the hour and half hour. So now, every time the bell sounds, I get up and walk around or do a small chore or errand. There's the bell now. Got to get up and take a break.
