This last step is for the more advanced users and will create a small portion of the cue (the stick used to hit the cue ball). As we will only see a small portion of the cue we'll just create a the black leather tip, the ivory ferrule and a bit of the wooden shaft. Top left is three ellipses. The gold colored ellipse will be the rough black tip. Draw a closed shape though the center of the two blue ellipses. Combine Shapes... Add Shapes to the shape and the right blue ellipse. Apply a black and 60% black Elliptical fill to the gold ellipse to make the tip. Apply a vertical Linear fill to the ferrule portion using ivory (pale yellow) colors, and bring it to the front (Ctrl f). Duplicate the remaining blue ellipse, move it to the left about 250 pixels, draw a rectangle that passes through the center of both ellipses and Combine Shapes... Add Shapes to create the shaft. Apply the same Fractal Clouds fill to the shaft that we used for the rack and stretch the long portion of the fill to simulate wood grain. Duplicate the shape and apply a Linear fill using dark brown and pale yellow. Apply a Brightness 50% transparency to the linear fill to add shape to the wood shaft. Group all the cue elements.
And here is the finished illustration. (No one needs to know that the pool cue is only a very small section). To impart a final bit of drama, I added a Linear fill to the background rectangle using a darker green (RGB 0, 51, 0) in the top left portion and angling down toward the #1 ball. Comments, questions? Is anybody out there??? Please use the form on the next page to send me your thoughts. If you did not understand part of the tutorial, please let me know and I will try to give a more in-depth explanation. Gary W. Priester
