Xara Xone May 2003 tutorial - Pages in a book

Using the Shape Editor or Pen Tool, create a horizontal line the width of the two guidelines. Change the width to .75 by altering the .5 on the Width text entry box on the Infobar and pressing Enter to apply the change.

The easiest way to create the horizontal line is to use the guideline. After the line is created, move it upward as shown above (actual size).

Using the Rectangle Tool, and holding down the Ctrl key to constrain the rectangle to a square, draw a 4 pixel square. Rotate the square 45 degrees by entering 45 in the Angle of Selection text entry box on the Infobar and pressing Enter to apply the rotation. Center the rotated square on the line using the Object Alignment menu (Arrange > Alignment).

Xara has two kinds of text, display and paragraph. To create display text you simply click the Text Tool on the page and start keying in your text. To create paragraph text, click the Text Tool on the page and drag to the right to the desired width of the text, which in this case is the two vertical guidelines.

NOTE: I have shown the guidelines on top of the image. By default, they appear underneath the objects on the page. Open the Layers Gallery, select the Guides layer title bar, and drag the title bar over the Layer 1 title bar.

I have used some text from a story I was writing about our move from San Francisco to New Mexico. You can use any text you want, or you can key in your text directly onto the page. If you are feeling uninspired, click here for the text file used on this page.

I copied my text from Microsoft Word to the clipboard (Ctrl c). Then with the text width still selected, I pasted the text onto the page (Ctrl v or Edit > Paste ). A dialog will appear to let you specify unformatted text or a Windows Metafile. Select Unformatted Text and press Paste.
