Foliate the branch with duplicate leaves. TIP: Drag and drop duplicate leaves by dragging the leaf and pressing the right mouse button before releasing the left mouse button. Click twice before dragging to enable rotate/skew mode. By enabling rotate/skew mode before duplicating the leaf, the duplicates will be created in rotate/skew mode eliminating the need to click twice each time. When you have enough leaves, select the branch and the leaves and Combine Shapes... Add Shapes. Change the leaf and branch color.
Place the branch and leaves shape over the book page and bookmark. Apply a small amount of feathering to the branch shape to soften the outline using the Change Size of Feather Region slider found in the top right area of the Infobar. Apply a Linear, Stained Glass transparency. Adjust the fill path arrow as shown and change the Transparency slider setting for the end transparency value to 50%. Ungroup the bookmark elements and bring the flower symbol to the front (Ctrl f). The brass is shiny so the branches refection will be darker. Make a duplicate of the branches and reduce the size by about 1/2. Change the fill color to a deep yellow/gold color. Place over the flower shape and select the branches and the flower shape. From the Arrange menu, select Apply Clip View. The branches will be masked inside the flower shape as shown above. Add a background rectangle in the back and fill it with a reddish brown color.
And here is the last step. Duplicate the background rectangle. Change the fill color to RGB 153, 102, 204, a pale purple. Apply an Elliptical, Stained Glass transparency. Reverse the values for the inside and outside transparencies so the outside value is 25% and the center value is 100%.
Finally, I made some additions and modifications. Basically I did not like the left page and so I redrew it and reworked the colors and transparency. I also sliced the shadow from the branch and made it conform more to the sharp curved shape of the fold of the left page. Your comments, questions, are always welcome. Please use the feedback form on the next page to let me know what you thought of this tutorial. Gary W. Priester
