Beer Glass - Xara Xtreme tutorial - ©2006 Gary W. Priester

Center the bitmap over the glass. (Actually if you cloned the shape this will already be done). Select the bitmap with the Transparency Tool and apply an Elliptical, Mix transparency. Change the inside transparency setting to 20%.

Bring the foam on the side of the glass, the bubbles, and the large highlight to the front.

Pretty awesome effect, no?

But the foam on the side of the glass does not look convincing, so my long suffering artist wife informs me. So since we've gone this far, let's see if we can make it better.

Select all the bubbles and group them.

Delete the darker shapes on the foam. Apply a Rounded, Inner Bevel. Decrease the Contrast setting to 30%. From the Slider Settings drop down list, change the Size to 10pix and press Enter. Change the Light Angle to 270°.

Create a Bitmap Copy (Arrange) True Color + Alpha.

Apply a Fractal Plasma, Mix transparency. Extend the fill path arrows as shown. The wife says this looks a bit better.

And here is where we ended up. I added a Linear-filled background and a reflection but everything else is just as you and I created it.

Bust as you know, I can never leave well enough alone. So I made a few additions and modifications.

I added the Cafe photo as a background and used Xara Picture Editor (Utilities menu) to blur the image. I added a cafe table top. To soften just the back edge, I created a small edge section by subtracting shapes from 2 slightly offset clones and used the Live Effects Tool > Enhance and adjusted the Blur/Sharpen slider to blur the shape.

I changed some of the colors in the clear glass portion to make the glass appear to be placed on the table. And the part of the foam on the top right side wanted to be darker to match the shading on the beer. And the Cafe Xara text is an Art Nouveau font called Gradl.

So what do you think? If you finished the tutorial, I owe you a beer. Next time you're in Placitas, New Mexico be sure to look me up. This tutorial is one of the more complex tutorials I have done in some time and I would love to hear how you did and if there are any major errors or omissions.
