THE XARA XONE | XARA.COM | THE XARA CONFERENCES

As always, we will be using Pixels as our units of measure. Right click on the screen and select Page Options... from the pop up menu. In the Units tabbed section, select Pixels for the Units and 0-255 for the Color Units. In the Grid and Ruler tabbed section set the Major Spacing to 100pix (key it in exactly like this please) and the Number of Subdivisions to 10. Press OK to close the dialog and apply the changes.

NOTE: You will notice from time to time I apply arbitrary colors to objects. I do this to make the objects easier to see. If I do not specify a fill for an object, you do not have to apply a fill or outline color.

When I show an ellipse or rectangle that has just been created, that has no fill, it is because I have set the fill to none before I exported the illustration. By default, all ellipses, rectangles and Quick Shapes have a black outline and a black fill. There is nothing wrong with your copy of Xara.

Naming Conventions. I use bold face to indicate the names of tools, galleries, keyboard shortcuts, and dialogs. Items such as unnamed icons and drop down lists, which have names when you let your cursor rest over them for a moment, are displayed in italics.

The Infobar is the context sensitive menu at the top of the screen and changes to reflect the options for the selected tool.

Photo of orange coffee cup ©2003 Gary W. PriesterEarlier in the summer, I took a digital photograph of my orange coffee cup on the kitchen counter in a beam of early morning sunlight. The image reminded me of the paintings of American artist Wayne Thiebaud. I created a vector version of the cup and posted it in the Xara Gallery Conference. There was tepid interest as to how the image was created. So I have reconstructed the cup for this month's tutorial.

Using the Ellipse Tool, create two centered ellipses to the sizes shown and space the ellipses so there is 330 pixels from top to bottom.

Select the larger ellipse with the Contour Tool. Drag any of the red control handles towards the center to apply an Inner Contour. Change the Contour Width to 8pix. Change the number of Contour Steps to 1 and press Enter.

With the contour selected, from the Arrange menu select Convert to Editable Shapes. And then ungroup the two ellipses (Ctrl u).

The no fill and no outlilne boxDrag two guidelines from the top screen ruler (Ctrl L to display rulers), the first a little above the center of the large ellipse and the second about 1/4 up from the bottom of the smaller ellipse. Using the Shape Editor Tool, click four control points to create the four-sided shape shown above. Click the last control point on top of the first to create a closed shape (the shape will fill solid black when the shape is closed). Set the fill to none by left clicking the cross hatched box to the left of the screen palette. (Right click if you want to set the outline to none).
