Create 2 centered circles to the sizes shown above on the left.

Select both circles and Arrange > Join Shapes. Apply a while Flat fill.

Center the white O-shape over the 2 blue O-shapes.

Apply a Circular, Mix transparency. Drag the center of the fill down as shown above right.

Create 2 more circles to the sizes shown and overlap them as shown with the larger circle on top and so that a crescent shape appears underneath.

Select both circles and Combine Shapes > Subtract Shapes (Ctrl 2).

Place the crescent shape on top as shown and apply a Linear, Mix transparency. Click and drag the Transparency Tool (F6) to apply a Linear transparency. Hold down the Ctrl key to constrain the direction.

With the shape selected, change the slider setter for the Change Size of Feather Region, which is in the upper right area of the Infobar, to 6pix. This soften the edges.

Select the bottom highlight (the white O-shape) and apply 3pix of feathering.
