Xara Xtreme Silver Fork tutorial

Group all the fork and tine objects (but not the handle objects) and position the fork group behind the handle group (Ctrl b or Edit > Put to Back).

Ctrl click on the ClipViewed dark reflection rectangle in the center of the handle. Switch to the Shape Editor Tool. Drag the top left control point about 6 pixels to the left and then drag the left edge into a curve as shown in the inset above top.

Copy this shape, Paste in Place (Shift Ctrl v), flip vertically, change the fill color to 3 and move it up until the shape is on top of the dark reflection shape.

Switch to the Transparency Tool and reverse the direction of the transparency as shown. Select this shape and the shape below and Arrange > Apply Clip View.

Final step, add a background behind the handle and fork tines and add a soft Wall Shadow with the Shadow Tool (Ctrl F2).

The background shown above is Medium Grain 8 from the Marble Fills folder in the Fill Gallery (Shift F11).

The settings used for the wall shadow are: Shadow Blur (first slider) 4pix. Shadow Transparency (second slider) 50%. X Offset 20pix, Y Offset -20pix.

And that's it. If you completed this tutorial you have my heartiest congratulations. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Final tweak (optional). Select just the background rectangle, then Create a Bitmap Copy (Arrange menu) with the True Color Color Depth option. Press Shift + Create in the Bitmap dialog to place the bitmap in the same position. Using the Transparency Tool, apply an Elliptical transparency. Reverse the inside and outside Transparency slider settings (100% in the center, 0% on the outside). This deepens the colors and adds a bit more drama.

So, did you finish? Was this tutorial too easy? Too hard? Or just right? Please use the feedback form on the next page to let me know how you did and to send me your comments and questions (kudos are gratefully accepted as well).
