Covered in this month's Workbook

In the XaraXone this month

It's a new year and a new look both for the Workbook and all the areas related to the Xara Xone. The January tutorial expands upon last month's Workbook tutorial on floating object stereograms creating a 3D hidden image Stereogram. Steve Newport, the pride of Canton, Ohio is back for his second solo exhibit in the January Featured Artist Gallery. Steve just gets better and better. Brian Etherington figures prominently in January both as the author of the Guest Tutorial, Creating a Palette of Harmonious Colors, but also with his new color mixing utility, called appropriately enough Color Mixer. Brian's Color Mixer provides a more intuitive way of mixing colors. You'll find it in the Shareware section.

I am accepting your contributions (Tips, Brushes, Templates, stuff like that). If your site has Xara graphics and is not listed, send me your link and a brief description of how you have used Xara on your site.

Free! Japanese Stereogram Magazines!

I create Stereogram images for a Japanese company that publishes what they call MOOKS (Magazine and Book). Last year they published several of these MOOKS and sent me some sample copies. In addition to my efforts are those of Gene Levine, one of the best Stereogram creators around, as well as a number of Japanese artists. I have three of these MOOKs available. If you are interested, let me know and I'll have a drawing to see who wins. The MOOKs are written in Japanese but you don't need to know Japanese to appreciate the stereograms. Use the Response Form to let me know you're interested.

Xara Launches Webstyle 3.1

I received a press release from the folks at Xara announcing the release of Webstyle 3.1. I happen to know that there are quite of few of you clever readers who prefer to use the built-in templates and handsome predesigned website graphics that come with this application to create images for your website including customizable button bars with rollover button effects, titles, and more. But what a lot of people don't realize is Webstyle 3.1 also has some pretty terrific tools for editing bitmap images. This free upgrade now includes a function, Auto Enhance, that is very similar to Auto FX's AutoEye which takes the guesswork out of color correcting bitmaps. This new feature examines the image and then enhances the contrast, and corrects the color without you having to do more than press a button. And the results are pretty incredible. I experimented with a few of my less successful photos taken with my digital camera (I'm still trying to figure it out) and with the help of Webstyle 3.1 they now look like I more or less know what I am doing!

A free trial version of 3.1 is available for download now from XARA.COM. A CD is sent to each purchaser with the complete set of over 1500 Webstyle templates, plus 50 bundled fonts and tutorial movies. List price of Xara Webstyle 3.1 starts at $69.00 (+ VAT in Europe) and existing owners of Webstyle 3.0 can upgrade online to 3.1 free of charge. Win 95/98/2000, Me, XP and NT..
