Found Logo Objects

One question I ask myself when designing a logo is are there any characters that can be modified? Sometimes the answer is yes and sometimes the answer is no. But it is a good place to start. Many times a symbol or photo can replace a character and be used to telegraph the nature of the product or service. In this tutorial, we'll look at a few ideas that popped into my head while I was putting this Workbook together.

In this example I substituted a star for the A in stars. The E in STRIPES was colored red and two white rectangles placed between the horizontal members of the E covering the vertical portion of the E to create stripes.

Not much need to explain what was done here. A rock and a roll. Could work with the text or on its own.

Two beveled circles with Glow Shadow effects applied replace the OO in GOOD creating a pair of halos while a devil mask (actually a Japanese Noa Play mask) adds to the evilness of the word EVIL.

Finally here are some found objects that you can use to create other characters. 4 toothpicks used for a W, a pair of paperclips arranged to make an M and a W. A yo yo I found in my drawer with the string arranged to make a lower case g (could be flopped to make a p a q or a d). And a roll of tape which makes a dandy O. Of course it helps if there is some relationship between the objects and what the logo represents.

These are just a few ideas that I hope will inspire you to look around your desk and around the house to see if you can discover more found logo objects.
